The strength of Liverpool’s squad is something that has come under fire many times this season, with many fans angry with the state that Brendan Rodgers was allowed to leave the team in, but Divock Origi is apparently encouraged by the strength of it.

Speaking after the Reds’ FA Cup exit at the hands of West Ham in the week, Origi told the Liverpool Echo: “We were all gutted to go out of the FA Cup.

“As a team we didn’t perform badly. We had our chances and should have killed the game off. The late goal was so disappointing.

“But when I look at this squad I am optimistic. I see a lot of positive things.

“I feel good after my first game back from injury. I am happy to be back on the pitch and it was great to have two quality players like Studge and Phil back out there too.

“We’ve got real competition for places now and that should make the level of the team go up.

“It has to be a good thing with a lot of important games to come.

“We’ve still got a lot of league games left to improve our position, plus Europe and the League Cup.

“This part of the season is vital and we need to be at our best to compete.”

As one of three returning players on Tuesday night, along with Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, Origi may perhaps have a point. At any one time since his arrival, Jurgen Klopp has had to do without one or most of his most talented players and the young Belgian, Sturridge and Coutinho’s return do put a nice, shiny gloss on the current squad heading into a tough run.

The young striker had initially struggled to make a mark at Anfield, but after his hat-trick against Southampton in the Capital One Cup he’s started to come to terms with the demands of the English game and will hopefully start contributing to the squad on a more regular basis, as the competition for places hots up.
