The popular Flanagan signed a new contract last night

Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan signed a new contract with Liverpool on Friday, much to the delight of Liverpool fans, and the 23 year old has expressed his own happiness at committing his future to the club.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Flanagan said: “It’s brilliant. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a child. I think this is my third professional contract now, so I’m really pleased.”

The local lad who made his debut in 2010 before having his real breakout season in 2013-14 when Liverpool came close to winning the title, has struggled with injury for the last 18 months before returning to first team action quite recently.

Many fans were concerned that the full-back would be allowed to run his contract down, having not long to run on his previous deal, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ensured that that wasn’t allowed to happen. And Flanagan himself expressed his gratitude to his manager.

Speaking about Klopp, Flanagan said: “He’s been massive. He’s been a brilliant help. When he came in, I was injured but he’s stuck by me you could say. He’s had faith in me and when the time has come, he’s put me in and had faith in me. I can only thank him.”

Flanagan has played barely 45 games for the club since making his debut, and only 4 times in the past 2 seasons but the manager has clearly seen enough of the popular youngster to believe that he can offer a lot over the next few years.
