He may well still divide opinion amongst some Liverpool fans for his eccentric style of play and the occasional defensive lapse, but Mamadou Sakho has emerged as the Reds’ main man at the back as the season approaches its climax.

The Frenchman has been at the club since joining three years ago, playing 74 games in that time. The current season has easily been his most fruitful to date, after struggling to really retain a place in the side under Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking on international duty with French news outlet RMC about the club and his former and current managers, Sakho said: “Yes, it’s nice to be in the selection. With the coach at Liverpool (Jurgen Klopp), it goes differently for me.

“In football, a lot can happen off the field. The most important thing is to stay focused, serious. The former coach (Brendan Rodgers) had the choices. I have accepted. I always remained myself and smiling in training.”

And during his tough spells out of the team under Rodgers, the 26 year old didn’t have any doubts about his future in Liverpool saying: “Honestly not. I always felt good in Liverpool. When I was in France, I didn’t gauge the real impact of this club’s history. Once I set foot inside, it’s fabulous. There’s a healthy atmosphere. The team is young and talented.

“Honestly, I really like this city, these fans and with this magnificent stadium. I am someone who likes stability, it suits me perfectly.”

Sakho’s words will no doubt be music to the ears of many Liverpool fans that rate the France international highly and perhaps for Jurgen Klopp who may choose to build his defence around Sakho.

And if the defender’s views have any effect on his current manager, he may well do: “He’s very human, super close to his players and all the members of the club. He is very kind.

“We feel he is very expressive but as we said from the beginning, this is really not to be mean to us. Rather, it is to encourage us.”

After his excellent form of late alongside Dejan Lovren, the Liverpool manager will be keen to see the pair get through the international break without issue and a few clean sheets for their nations wouldn’t go amiss in the process, no doubt.
