With little information either way, as to what caused Mamadou Sakho to test positive for a banned substance, most outlets and pundits have chosen to keep their mouths shut pending further information this week.

Not so, Jamie Carragher, who has never been found wanting of a controversial opinion or two. Such is the case where Sakho and his positive test are concerned. Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ this evening, Carragher said: “It’s a nightmare for the player.

I think he’s let himself and the club down badly, because he’s become a really important player.

“There’s serious questions to be asked of him.

“He’s had a great campaign. He’s one of the leaders of the team now, certainly within that run, thinking about how well he played in the Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund games. It’s now how Liverpool fill that void.

“For a professional footballer, as in any sport, it’s not acceptable.”

The earliest indications are that Sakho accidentally ingested the banned substance when using a fat burning supplement and will request that a B sample is used, whilst the club are making it very clear that they haven’t banned the player, he is simply being taking out of the firing line pending a UEFA investigation.

The 26 year old has had his best season in a Liverpool shirt to date this season, since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, forming a solid partnership with Dejan Lovren and has played 33 games in all competitions (a record since joining the club), scoring 2 times in recent games.

The central defender will no doubt be a big miss in the coming games, and Reds fans will wait with baited breath to see the outcome of an investigation.
