The central defender has been suspended by the club

In some unexpected, and slightly bizarre, breaking news this afternoon, Liverpool Football Club have suspended central defender Mamadou Sakho for a failed drugs test.

The French star has been enjoying the best spell of his Liverpool career recently after finally winning a starting berth on a regular basis and forming a strong partnership with Dejan Lovren at the heart of the back line, and the news will no doubt come as a shock to many Reds fans.

The club has released its official statement a few moments ago, confirming that, while the player has not yet been subject to an official playing ban, he has been suspended from match selection pending an official UEFA investigation.

The statement began saying: “Yesterday, Friday 22nd April 2016, a formal communication was received from UEFA stating that they are investigating a possible anti-doping rule violation by Mamadou Sakho.”

Further news will follow as it arrives.

Update: Liverpool have since confirmed that the player has not been suspended by the club. Liverpool have simply chosen to not select him for upcoming games.
