Klopp probably didn’t expect such a positive response to making so many changes

After Manchester United spent another fortune in the summer on ‘reinforcing’ their squad, it’s fair to say that many assumed Van Gaal would put part 2 of his plan in place, clawing back the ground Man Utd lost after Ferguson retired.

The reality is that Liverpool are currently undergoing another transitional period under a new manager since October, yet sit just 5 points behind United with a game in hand and knocked the old enemy out of the Europa League in the last round. Oh, and that goal difference is now looking much healthier too.

What’s the point in pointing that out, you might ask? Well, the Reds’ manager made 7 changes to the side that pushed Borussia Dortmund, currently ranked by many as the form side in Europe, all the way in one of the biggest stadia in Europe.

Klopp gave young midfielder, Kevin Stewart, another chance after his injury struggles recently. Whilst upcoming young star Sheyi Ojo was given his Premier League debut.

The visit of Stoke also saw both centre backs replaced, along with Joe Allen replacing Jordan Henderson in midfield. Roberto Firmino replaced Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge started ahead of Divock Origi. Not the worst possible replacements, mind you, but nobody was too excited at the prospect of so many.

You can see from the title of this piece that things probably turned out better than expected and the Reds won at a canter. Much of the credit has to go to Klopp, for a new-found desire he seems to have instilled, even in players that are probably not going to be here next season. See which ones we gave most credit to below.
