New Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has said he is intending to challenge for Simon Mignolet’s place in the side. The German was recently purchased from Bundesliga side Mainz for £4.7million where he was number one for almost three years.

Karius told the Liverpool Echo that he wasn’t fazed by taking the number one jersey and is confident that he will be first choice under Jurgen Klopp next season.

“I wanted the no.1 shirt because I was wearing it at Mainz – and I want to be the no.1 here at Liverpool.”

When asked about his style of play, he described himself as “offensive” and willing to take risks:

“My goalkeeping style is very modern. (It’s) offensive and also with a bit of risk, something that I’m willing to take.

With a high pressing game, and a high defensive line, Jurgen Klopp will be looking for his keeper to be quick off his line and able to sniff out danger if a ball is passed over the defence, something the 22 year old is already versed in doing. Simon Mignolet on the other hand is not known for his fleet-footedness and will have a fight on his hands to be first choice next campaign.
