Former Bayern Munich and Germany star Thomas Strunz has backed Franz Beckenbauer in telling Mario Gotze that a move to Liverpool to join up with mentor Jurgen Klopp would be the best move for the 23 year old.

The Bayern midfielder was told by new manager Carlo Ancelotti that he can’t guarantee him first team football leading to increased speculation about the player’s future. Strunz said when asked by German TV channel Sport1:

“I would not advise him to return to Dortmund, because I believe that the expectations would be too large and the climate would not be good for him. Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool would be the better location.”

Gotze is believed to be the target of four clubs including Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Juventus. German icon Beckenbauer had said a few days a go the German World Cup winner should go where he is comfortable, and that Klopp and Liverpool would fit that description.

The forward has a year left on his contract at Bayern and it is highly likely that both Beckenbauer and Strunz are trying to persuade the player not to return to rivals Dortmund so he doesn’t line up against Bayern next season.
