Middlesbrough have dropped their interest in signing Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, according to Italian website Tuttomercatoweb. The Slovakian is expected to leave Anfield this summer after falling down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

With Boro out of the race for the 31 year old, it paves the way for a move to Turkey with Turkish champions Besiktas leading Galatasaray in the hunt for the Slovakian international.

Skrtel has spent the last 8 and half seasons with the Reds after a £6.5million transfer from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg in January 2008. He has made over 300 appearances for the Merseyside club and is one of the club’s longest serving players.

He struggled for game time under Klopp and also suffered a torn hamstring at the start of the year which made it difficult to establish himself under the German manager. His poor second half performance against Southampton which saw the Reds lose a 2-0 lead and concede 3 goals was much criticised by fans.
