Liverpool are “confident” that new goalkeeper signing Loris Karius won’t miss the start of the season, according to the Liverpool Echo. It has been speculated that Germany will include the 22 year old in their squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics which starts in August, meaning the Keeper would miss the first month of the season for the Reds.

Karius was signed for £4.7million last month from German side Mainz and has already stated his aim to dislodge current number one Simon Mignolet from his starting position at Anfield.

The Echo believes that the club may not be picked with FC Cologne’s Timo Horn and Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno more likely to be selected for the games. If he does stay behind, Karius could steal a march on Mignolet who will return later to preseason training after being part of Belgium’s European Championship squad in France. He could even face his old club Mainz after Liverpool agreed to play the German club in a friendly as part of their preparations for the new season.
