After seemingly failing to land Mario Gotze, and stalling in a move for Udinese midfielder Piotr Zielinski, the Portuguese Newspaper Abola believes Liverpool have turned their sights on Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario.

The 23 year old has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Chelsea in recent weeks and has been named in Portugal’s final 23 man squad for the European Championships in France.

Mario has had a good season for Sporting providing 11 assists and scoring 7 goals in 45 matches last campaign, helping the Lisbon club to second in Portugal’s Primera Liga. Despite a record points total of 86 points and just two losses, they were pipped to the league by Lisbon rivals Benfica who dropped just 14 points as they retained their title.

The Portuguese star has nine caps for his country, and usually plays on the right hand side of an attacking trio, and is involved against England in tonight’s last warm up friendly before the Euros.
