AC Milan are stepping their chase for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to calciomercato.com. The website believes that representatives from the Rossoneri have met with their Madrid counterparts in Milan to discuss a deal for the Croatian international.

The 22 year old has been linked with a moves to Liverpool and Tottenham in recent weeks but the Serie A club is confident they can seal a deal for the player. They want Kovacic initially on loan but are willing to agree to an obligation to make the deal permanent after his first season at the San Siro.

Milan are right in the middle of a takeover from a Chinese consortium at the moment so transfer business is proving difficult, but they seem to be keen on a move for the Croatian international. Real Madrid only bought the midfielder from Milan’s rivals Inter for €29million at the start of last season but the player failed to establish himself as a first team regular under either Rafa Benitez or Zinedine Zidane.
