Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has told the Liverpool Echo he is relishing the competition that comes with playing for a big club.

The German stopper will be in direct competition with Belgium international Simon Mignolet but the 23 year old says he is “not scared” about fighting for a first team place. He says he did not leave his last club Mainz to be a substitute:

“Of course I know that a club like this has more competition. It’s a bigger club and better players means more competition. I am not scared or anything. If I was, I wouldn’t have come here. I have a good feeling. I wouldn’t come here just to sit on the bench. That doesn’t make sense for me. I’m not a keeper who hasn’t shown his ability. I know I am a good goalkeeper and I’ve shown that a lot. I could have stayed at Mainz and played there. If I wasn’t sure I could come and play here this season, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Karius revealed that he had discussions with manager Jurgen Klopp about his participation in the Olympics and they both agreed it was best for him to stay with the Reds so as not to miss the first two games of the season and to help establish himself at the club. The German keeper was bought for just £4.7million in early May but has a a huge chance to replace Mignolet as number one keeper by impressing in preseason with the Belgian currently away on holiday after the European Championships.
