Schalke midfielder Max Meyer has expressed his admiration for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in an interview with German football magazine Kicker.

Meyer has been linked with a £28million move to Liverpool in recent weeks and the 20 year old is aware of Klopp’s past praise for his talents, and is flattered by the compliments he has received from a person he describes as a “great coach”:

“I know from the past that he appreciates me as a player. After my first derby against Dortmund – since I was 18 years, and have scored a goal – he has publicly expressed praise for me. This is a nice feeling from such a great coach as well.”

The Germany midfielder was quick to clarify however that he is not seeking a move to Liverpool and that he will be staying in Germany with Schalke:

“I am very happy at Schalke and this still very young. I have many more years as a player ahead of me.”

The arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle for £25million will quieten speculation about moves for another midfielder as Jurgen Klopp has mentioned the Dutch international can play in central midfield, as well as in a number of other positions. Whether he plays in the heart of midfield or in another role further forward or on the wing, we will have to wait and see.
