Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has called Bologna chairman Joey Saputo about a possible move to the Serie A side, according to the local newspaper Corriere di Bologna.

On the recommendation of his former boss Roberto Mancini, Balotelli contacted the Canadian businessman regarding a swithc to Bologna and it seems as though the Italian club are interested in a deal.

Saputo has yet to broach the idea with manager Roberto Donadoni yet but the Corriere di Bologna believe the coach is able to handle difficult talent after managing Antonio Cassano at Parma and with Italy. They also believe Donadoni would be keen on turning around Balotelli’s career to demonstrate his coaching credentials.

Bologna has been a club where some famous names include Giuseppe Signori and Roberto Baggio have revitalised their careers, and Balotelli believes it could do the same for him.

Finances will again be a barrier to any move. Liverpool are willing to allow Balotelli to leave on a free loan but want most of his €6m a year salary paid by his next club. Bologna could only afford a fraction of his wages with the Corriere di Bologna reporting Bologna would pay between €1m and €1.3m.
