In an interview with Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona Sporting Director Robert Fernandez talked about the signing of full back Lucas Digne from Paris Saint-Germain.

Digne had been on loan at Roma the previous season and was expected to return to the Italian club on a permanent transfer, but with the departure of reserve left back Adriano to Besiktas, Barcelona made their move for the Frenchman. Fernandez also mentioned however that there was one English club who had also made an offer for the 23 year old:

“PSG already had an offer from a good English team but when we get in touch with the club, the player tells us that he only wants to come to Barcelona.”

The only English club who have been linked with a move for Digne all summer was Liverpool, which suggests that if Barcelona had not come in for the player, the left back could have been plying his trade at Anfield this summer.

Of course, there is no point dwelling on what might have been but it does explain why maybe the Reds were not as active in bringing in more compeition for Alberto Moreno this summer and why James Milner has effectively been converted to a makeshift full back.

No doubt, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could have sought out other targets but the Reds boss has made it clear that he is only seeking signings that would suit his style of play. They may have not had an alternative target in mind after also losing out on Leicester’s Ben Chilwell this summer.
