Fowler: The key to a Liverpool title challenge

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has backed Jurgen Klopp’s side to compete with the best teams at the top of the table but only if they are able to produce their good form on a consistent basis.

The Reds have been notoriously inconsistent in their displays over the past two years in the league and have come unstuck against some of the league’s lower lights despite high profile victories against the biggest clubs in Klopp’s tenure. Writing in his column for the Mirror, Fowler believes it would be stupid to rule out Liverpool from a title tilt but he is wary about the side’s ability to sustain its form:

“You would be daft to say Liverpool can’t challenge the top clubs this year, especially because they don’t have the distraction of Europe. The key for Liverpool is consistency. They’ve got a real collection of talent going forward, players you love to watch, but can they produce it against the teams who’ll dog it out against them? Can they reproduce it every week?”

The convincing victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night has made the Reds second favourites behind Manchester City for the league title among some bookmakers, but if they can’ follow their win up against Chelsea, with a home win against Hull next in the league, such optimism may quickly fade. To sustain any challenge, Liverpool will need to fight it out against the lower teams to get results as well.
