Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says he is delighted that Fenway Sports Group opted to redevelop Anfield rather than move to a new ground.

The former Reds midfielder feels that the history and memories that have been shared at the stadium means that it would have been very difficult to recreate it at another venue. In a video for LA Galaxy TV (quoted by the Liverpool Echo), Gerrard said:

“I’m just so happy and pleased that they’re developing that stadium and not moving to a new stadium. It’s got a lot of history there and a lot of special moments. I’m really looking forward in the future to go back and watch Liverpool there and enjoy the atmosphere.”

Liverpool’s redevelopment of Anfield took a huge step forward with the unveiling of the new main stand this summer. The 8500 extra seats increases the capacity for 54,000.

Plans are also in place to redevelop the Anfield Road End to boost the capacity further to around 58,800 with 4,8000 new seats, but that new development has yet to be given the go ahead by FSG. Liverpool have had planning permission in place since 2014 to redevelop the Anfield Road End but it was said a decision would only be made once the main stand has been completed.
