Liverpool centre back Joel Matip has had an assured start to his time with the Reds, and has established himself in the first team despite having a difficult summer with injuries hampering his settling in at the club.

Jurgen Klopp’s side has however failed to keep a clean sheet in the league so far this season after conceding once again at the weekend from a corner to a Hull City side already down to ten men. The Cameroon international is however confident in his own abilities that he can fight off strong competition for his place in the side. He told the club’s official website:

“Competition is always good in every position and it will help bring the best out of me. I have to be better and I want to be better. Having that quality of player around the squad means that if we have injuries – as we have in the first few weeks of the season – there are enough players of a high calibre to come into the team. I am also self-confident enough to say that if I am at a good level, I will play and I will be able to help the team.”

Dejan Lovren missed the Hull City win with a viral infection but is expected to return to the side for the match against Swansea City at the weekend. With Klopp favouring Matip and Lovren as his first choice centre half pairing, it is expected that Ragnar Klavan will make way for him to take his place back in the starting eleven.
