Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has given his backing to Reds left back Alberto Moreno after claiming the Spaniard had a “brilliant game” against Derby County last night.

It was the 24 year old’s first start since he was dropped in favour of James Milner against Burnley back in late August but the Reds manager was keen to single out the full back for praise after Liverpool’s 3-0 win in the EFL cup third round last night. He said to Liverpoolfc.com:

“Alberto Moreno had a brilliant game, very calm – that’s how he trained in the last few weeks since he didn’t play. He was really cool, concentrated and disciplined in training sessions and that’s how he played, really good.”

No doubt Klopp’s words were designed to keep Moreno’s confidence high after being replaced in his position by an attacking midfielder. It’s good to see that Moreno’s head hasn’t dropped after being left on the bench for the past few matches but the key issue is whether he can cut out the errors in his game which cost the Reds so dearly in last season’s Europa League final, and begin to make a case to be included in the starting eleven once again by putting in a string of consistent displays every time he is called upon.
