FSG President and Liverpool director Mike Gordon has been speaking about Liverpool’s transfer policy after the unveiling Anfield’s new main stand.

Speaking before the Reds’ 4-1 victory against Leicester City at the weekend, Gordon told the Daily Mail that the new main stand did not necessarily mean that there would be more money to spend on transfers, and to compete toe-to-toe with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea:

“It’s a very large step forward and it will help,Whether it will mean that we’re going to spend along the lines of United, Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal (I’m not sure).”

“I worry more about getting the most out of the money that we spend rather than competing in the transfer market on a pound-for-pound basis. Wins and losses are made here [points to the pitch] not in the transfer market.”

“I’m really happy with the team that we have, the one that we’ve built over the last several years. We’ve spent a fair amount of money, and I think we’re going to see that on display this season and in the seasons to come.”

Manchester United became the first British club to earn more than £500m in revenue for the past financial year, and the main stand is seen as one of the ways the Reds can begin the bridge the gap in terms of commercial and matchday income which had been restricted in recent years by Anfield’s capacity and lack of hospitality boxes. Another important component will of course be competing at the top end of the Premier League on a regular basis and achieving Champions League football.
