Liverpool legend questions Henderson’s credentials

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon doesn’t believe that Jordan Henderson is a good enough player to be Liverpool captain.

The Reds midfielder has struggled with injuries over the past year since being given the captain’s armband by former manager Brendan Rodgers last summer after replacing club icon Steven Gerrard.

He has been fully fit since returning to preseason training however but under Jurgen Klopp this season, the 26 year old has been playing in an unfamiliar holding midfield role in the absence of Emre Can through injury. After a difficult start, there was a marked improvement in his display against Tottenham before the international break.

Speaking to Fox Sports in Australia though, McMahon doesn’t believe Henderson has the ability to be the Reds captain but he doesn’t think Jurgen Klopp has many other options:

“Jordan is a good guy and a good player but he’s not a great player.”

“I just think okay or good is not good enough for Liverpool Football Club and I think you have to earn the respect and the right to be skipper there but having said that, who else would be captain? There aren’t many options in that squad. Is there anyone else you’d choose? Probably not.”

Henderson will almost certainly lead out his Reds side against Leicester City on Saturday evening in Liverpool’s first match at Anfield this season in front of the new main stand.
