Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes a strong home record will be a key factor in securing a top four position in the league this season.

The Reds have finished once in the top four in the past seven seasons when they finished runners up under Brendan Rodgers three years ago, but Lucas believes the Reds can mount a challenge if their home form is consistent. He told the club’s official website:

“Every year, the teams that have a very good record at home challenge for titles and the top four, so it’s very important that we do that this year – starting with the first game.”

The 29 year old is fit for selection after recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained in preseason, but he was on the verge of leaving Anfield earlier this summer before manager Jurgen Klopp pulled the plug on his move to Galatasaray as he is required as defensive cover.

The Brazilian can now look forward to walking out in front of 54,000 fans after construction work was completed on the new main stand. The Reds have had to play their first three league matches away from home in order for the stand to be ready. They will face Premier League champions Leicester City on Saturday evening for the first time at home this season.
