Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby believes that Daniel Sturridge lack of confidence in front of goal has contributed to a feeling among Reds fans that he is no longer an automatic starter.

The 27 year old has not scored in the league this season and has just two goals against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup to his name so far this campaign. Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Molby hopes that the England international gets back in the goals soon not only to regain his confidence, but also to convince others he merits more starts in the first team.

“He’s just struggling a little bit with his game at the moment and the only cure for that is goals. That’s what you live and breathe as a goalscorer. He just needs to physically go through scoring goals again, take the pressure off because people are looking at Liverpool at their best at the moment and it doesn’t involve Daniel Sturridge.”

Sturridge started the 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Monday but was isolated up front as Jose Mourinho’s side cut off supply from midfield. Jurgen Klopp defended the forward after the game by saying no striker would have enjoyed playing up front in that match but many Reds fans now believe Roberto Firmino playing in the number nine role offers more to the team than Sturridge currently.
