Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says it will be difficult to chop and change the goalkeeper like he does in other positions, despite having two “strong” candidates for the number one jersey.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s match against Manchester United to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds boss says he will have a permanent first choice in place:

“It’s difficult but from my point of view it’s a luxury problem. It’s a decision between two very strong goalkeepers. I can’t handle the goalkeeping position like I handle all the other positions. I can’t say: ‘Today you, tomorrow you’, like I may with a defender or full-back or striker. It’s not possible. I respect this so I will make my decision.”

Before the international break, the German stated that he wanted to see Loris Karius in action in order to make a decision on whether the former Mainz player or Simon Mignolet would be the new number one keeper.

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo believes Karius is likely to be given the nod to start tonight’s match versus Manchester United which suggests that Mignolet can expect an extended stay on the bench, with the possible exception of playing in some cup matches this season. The Belgian will be unlucky to lose out after not doing much wrong at the start of the campaign when called upon.
