Liverpool manager has confirmed that Loris Karius is now Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper. It was reported in the summer that the £4.7million signing from Mainz was to be Klopp’s first choice keeper but his hand injury in preseason gave the gloves to Mignolet.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference for the game against Tottenham tomorrow night in the EFL Cup, Klopp revealed that he wanted both keepers to impress him at the start of the campaign, and he made his decision to pick Karius in the international break in early October:

“In this moment we have a number one, it’s Loris Karius. like we had a number one when Loris was not fit, it was Simon. I can imagine what you now make of this but that’s the situation. I cannot leave them in doubt. There was a short moment with the two or three games we gave Loris to see a bit more of him but after the last international break we made this decision.”

Karius has yet to be truly tested in a Liverpool shirt despite starting the last five matches as the goals he has conceded have been from set pieces rather than from open play. Teams have found it hard to break down the Reds with both Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren both being praised highly by Klopp for their performances. With Simon Mignolet starting against Spurs tomorrow, Karius’s next major test will come against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
