Liverpool defender Joel Matip has been talking to the German media about the start of his career with the Reds, having joined on a free transfer from Schalke in the summer.

In an interview with Die Welt newspaper, the Cameroon international was asked about what drew him to playing for Liverpool under manager Jurgen Klopp:

“It was a mix of the club which attracted me, and the coach. Jürgen Klopp has a special aura. He is – as many certainly perceive him from the outside – very emotional. He manages to take you on his journey.”

Matip went on in the interview to discuss how he sung a Cologne supporters song Viva Colonia at his squad initiation because he couldn’t think of anything else, and how he knew he had made the right choice in choosing Liverpool when he watched the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund last season.

The 25 year old has established himself alongside Dejan Lovren as the number once centre back pairing under Klopp this season, and they kept their first league clean sheet of the campaign against Manchester United on Monday night in the 0-0 draw at Anfield.
