The players in Liverpool’s squad were signed at an average age of just 23.75, according to the Football Observatory. The Reds are however behind two Premier League clubs, Bournmouth (23.68) and Tottenham (23.35) who signed their squad’s players at a slightly lower age.

Somewhat surprisingly, despite their reputation for signing “Galactico” style players, Real Madrid top the list with the squad bought at an average of just 22.53. The full list can be seen here.

The low average age does indicate the policy of Fenway Sports Group of signing young players with big potential. Although it hasn’t worked in some cases (like with Lazar Markovic), there have been a number of success stories with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and others signed below 25 years of age.

We may see the trend continue as although manager Jurgen Klopp has said he has the first and last say on signings, he does tend to prefer to work with younger players in order to use their energy, and willingness to learn, to implement his high pressing philosophy on the pitch.
