Liverpool full back Nathaniel Clyne believes the Reds were the only team who were trying to win the North West Derby on Monday night.

Manchester United were set up to stifle Liverpool and at times had a back six in play with wingers Ashley Young and Marcus Rashford tasked with man marking the Liverpool full backs James Milner and Clyne himself.

The 25 year old says that the Reds were to blame for not being able to break the United defensive unit down, but they were happy to keep their first clean sheet in the league this season. He told Liverpoolfc.com:

“I thought we performed quite well overall. We were the better team on the day and the team that went out there to try to win the game. We did really well but unfortunately couldn’t break them down, which was a bit disappointing on our behalf. But at the end of the day, it was a good point and a clean sheet.”

The Reds now sit fourth in the table on 17 points, two points behind league leaders Manchester City after facing Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea away, while already meeting Manchester United and current champions Leicester City at home. They now have an eight game run in the league before the Merseyside derby against much less fancied teams, and will want to take full advantage.
