AC Milan have emerged as rivals to Liverpool in the race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, according to calciomercatoweb.it.

The Italian website says that Milan vice president Adriano Galliani has already enquired about Kondogbia’s availability but it is believed that Inter would only sell if they receive a bid they can’t refuse. They paid Monaco £25million for the Frenchman back in June 2015 and would certainly ask for a similar price or more if they were to sell.

The 23 year old has fallen out of favour under manager Frank De Boer after being substituted after just 28 minutes against Bologna with the Dutch boss explaining the Frenchman failed to follow instructions to play a simple passing game. He was subsequently benched for their next match against Roma.

Transfers between city rivals Milan and Inter are not uncommon with Andrea Pirlo and Antonio Cassano being two of the most high profile direct transfers between the two.

Milan are looking for a replacement for midfield stalwart Ricardo Montolivo who is out for six months with Kondogbia a candidate to replace him. Liverpool meanwhile were linked with the player at the start of the month as Jurgen Klopp looks for a strong, athletic defensive midfielder to rival Emre Can and Jordan Henderson.
