Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has ruled out Liverpool making a serious title challenge this season despite an impressive start to the league campaign.

The Reds have won five of their seven league matches, losing only to Burnley, whilst already beating Arsenal and Chelsea, but Nicholas believes that the Reds’ leaky defence will be the side’s undoing this campaign. He does however believe that they can compete for Champions League places. He wrote in a column for Skysports.com:

“His team is prone to mood swings defensively. For me, they are not strong enough to win the title, but I’m tipping them to make the top four with no European football.”

The Reds title credentials will be tested once again immediately after the international break when they face Manchester United at Anfield on Monday Night Football. Jose Mourinho’s side have struggled for consistency so far this season and were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom of the table Stoke on Saturday. The Reds meanwhile will go into the match after a strong second half fightback against Swansea at the weekend, turning a 1-0 first half deficit to win 2-1.
