Bournemouth have joined Huddersfield Town in the race to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez on loan in the January transfer window, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Guardian reported yesterday that Huddersfield boss David Wagner wanted to use his friendship with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp to persuade him to allow the 19 year old to join the Terriers on loan, and it now seems Premier League side Bournemouth are seeking a similar deal.

The centre back has been sidelined for over a year with serious knee and Achilles injuries and has only recently returned to full training with the first team squad.

The Echo are reporting that the Reds would be reluctant to let Gomez go. The more likely return to competitive action looks likely to be through minutes with Liverpool’s Under 23 side, and then from the bench with the senior team. Loans can be used to help injured players gain match fitness but Gomez could well see first team action at Anfield.

Liverpool don’t have a recognised understudy for Nathaniel Clyne at right back, and the former Charlton player performed admirably as a full back when thrust into the team under Brendan Rodgers at the start of last season. The most likely scenario then is that Gomez will begin to play in cup matches to replace the reliable Clyne or James Milner at left back.
