Speaking to Sky Sports, Liverpool legend-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher has said that Philippe Coutinho’s injury at the weekend could prove detrimental to the club’s title challenge this season.

The Reds have been in fine form this season so far with the likes of the Brazilian joined by Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane up top to create one of the most potent attacking trios in the country.

That trumvirate, though, could be split up over the next few games at least after the former Inter Milan man was stretchered off in the first half against Sunderland at the weekend, leading many Reds fans to wait with abated breath for the extent of his lay-off.

The Anfield side would go on to beat the Black Cats 2-0 in the end, before Chelsea went back above them to top the league by a point thanks to a win over Spurs, and the former Reds stalwart Carragher thinks the injury could be highly significant in the race for the title.

When asked how much of a blow Coutinho’s absence could be to the club’s fortunes this season, he said:

“It could be huge, he’s Liverpool’s best player.

“I think Liverpool’s XI playing week in week out can match up to almost any team in the league.

“Have they got the squad the other sides have got? I don’t think so to be honest.” Carragher then added:

“It is a worry, it will affect them.”

Clearly, then for the former England man, the Reds need to bolster their squad in January if they are to sustain their title challenge this season.
