Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has compared being in charge of the Reds to keeping a Faberge Egg safe. The Reds director, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season, used the simile to explain how the club is expensive but could easily break if tampered with.

In a wide ranging interview with the Business Post (quotes via the Liverpool Echo), Ayre talked about his time being CEO of the club he has supported since he was a boy:

“I always describe it to people that it’s like looking after a Faberge Egg. It’s worth a fortune and God help that you would ever break it or damage it. It’s like carrying it around in your pocket most days. And some days you might sit on it. But the important thing is that you are always conscious of it.”

“You get criticism as a club and an individual and I understand that, because people care so much about the outcome. They care so much about the product. But if you are going to do this job you have to do it knowing that you are carrying that special thing around with you.”

Ayre has presided over the expansion of Anfield under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group, as well as being involved in some key transfers since taking over as chief executive in 2014. He was however caught up in the controversy surrounding ticket price increases that led to a massive stadium walkout by Liverpool fans. When he leaves Anfield in the summer, it is expected he will join Bundesliga-2 side 1860 Munich.
