Liverpool legend Steve Heighway believes Bill Shankly would approve of current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp’s style of management and the team’s style of play.

The former Academy director, who helped develop the likes of Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Carragher, has returned to the Reds in the last couple of years at the behest of current director Alex Inglethorpe, to mentor the next generation of Liverpool stars.

Talking to the Daily Telegraph about the current climate at the club under Klopp, Heighway said:

“There has been enormous change at Liverpool, but when I see what is happening here now – and what the first team are doing – I approve. And I think Shanks would approve, too.”

“He’d approve of the ethics. He’d approve of the work rate. He’d approve the way the first team is playing. And he’d approve the way we are treating the youngsters. He would like that. He would like that a lot.”

With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ovie Ejaria, Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn all making their mark at different levels at the club, the future does look bright for the Reds academy. Everyone will be hoping that the current setup can reproduce a golden generation like Heighway did in the 1990s.

With the right structure in place, and with plans in the works to merge the Melwood and Kirkby sites to better enable youth players to make the transition to senior football, everything is looking very positive.
