Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has decided to leave the Reds, according to calciomercato.com. The Brazilian has been a bit part player over the past two years, and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, the Italian website report that the 29 year old will leave the club after almost a decade.

The midfielder was on the verge of joining Turkish side Galatasaray but the move fell through after it was reported that manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to keep the player as cover.

Lucas has evolved into a centre half under Klopp, and has even moved ahead of Ragnar Klavan and Mamadou Sakho in the pecking order if either first team players Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren get injured or suspended.

His last start came against Watford in the 6-1 win in early November and he has adapted well to playing in central defence, possessing good positioning and the ability to play out from the back.
