As reported on Southampton’s official club website, Sam McQueen has signed a new long-term deal with the club that should see him stay on for the next four-and-a-half years.

The news could come as a blow to Liverpool who were linked by The Mirror with the promising Saints man after he emerged for the south coast team earlier this season.

Injuries to their regular left backs Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett saw the young Englishman step up and impress with the Reds certainly in need of more options down that side of the defence.

At the moment it’s James Milner being played in that role and whilst he has done a good job, new blood certainly wouldn’t go amiss.

It appears, though, that the Reds will now have to look elsewhere for an option in that area with McQueen set to see at least his short-term future played out at St. Mary’s.
