Speaking to Sky Sports, after our 2-0 win over Leeds United in the EFL Cup, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was left mightily impressed by the performance of young defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The academy graduate played at right back for the Reds as they progressed into the last four of the competition against the Championship side with a much changed line-up from Jurgen Klopp still impressing at Anfield.

Indeed, Alexander-Arnold earned a lot of plaudits for an assured display far outstripping his years and, whilst Ben Woodburn picked up most of the attention in becoming the Reds’ youngest ever scorer, Carra gave special mention to the fledgling right back.

“He just looks like a footballer, a fantastic athlete, perfect for the full back position. He’s only 18, so you think about how he’s going to look physically in three or four years time. He looks like he’s already got the legs and the pace. The strength will come too.”

Carragher knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a top right back for the club having played there during his early days in the team.

He eventually moved into the centre of defence and from thereon became one of the best the club has had so his praise undoubtedly carries gravitas for Alexander-Arnold to try and spur himself on from.
