As quoted by ITV Sport, former Reds goalkeeper and all-round fan favourite Pepe Reina has jumped to the defence of our current stopper Loris Karius – labelling him ‘brilliant,’ and saying the team could have helped him out more against Bournemouth.

The German was a summer signing from Mainz in the Bundesliga but has come in for fierce criticism this week after his part in the loss at Bournemouth.

In the last few minutes the ‘keeper spilled the ball in front of Nathan Ake who duly slammed home to win the Cherries the game with many thinking he might not be good enough for the Reds after all.

Certainly, he needs to look more confident and command his area more but our old Spanish number 1 isn’t too worried.

Reina lavished praise on the young stopper and instead said the team could have helped him out more. He said:

“I think he doesn’t need any encouragement. I think he’s a brilliant goalkeeper who is doing really well.

“It’s a team, you know, that also at times has to do better for the goalkeeper.”

Indeed, our defence hardly covered themselves in glory either with Dejan Lovren and Lucas Leiva failing to take control of a rapidly deteriorating performance and we’ll be looking for a far better display this weekend.

The Reds host West Ham at Anfield next time out as they look to get their title challenge back on track.
