Wigan – 2005-06

|

Wigan typified the term ‘underdog’ after their surprise promotion to the Premier League. Despite being in the third division only 10 years prior they achieved their ambitions of top flight football under the leadership of manager Paul Jewell and chairman Dave Whelan. Their debut season in the Premier League is one to remember with their fearless approach and ‘enjoy every moment’ attitude seeing them win a legion of supporters. Amazingly they finished 10th and made the Carling Cup final only to be beaten by Manchester United. I doubt the Latics fans will ever forget the late extra time semi-final winner scored by Jason Roberts against Arsenal at Highbury.
