Wednesday signed the Dutch midfielder for £2.5m from PSV Eindhoven in 1998 but it soon proved to be a poor signing and the side were relegated in his second season at the club. After experiencing the physical side of the game in First Division, he sat out the remaining year of his contract, citing a tummy ache. At the end of that season, he retired to concentrate on his poetry. Wednesday fans had their own special ode’s to the Dutchman.
