In fifteen years at Charlton he turned a modest club into Premier League furniture. Taking the club through two promotions, including the dramatic play-off final, penalty shoot-out win over Sunderland, he kept the club safely in the top-flight until he quit in 2006, and it’s clear what has happened since then. Having taken over at West Ham, his first game saw them beat Manchester United and saved them from relegation. Quit in 2008 following a dispute with the board and hasn’t returned to football since. He never completed his rise to the top and having been overlooked for the England job he may have to start again to build up his reputation.
