Took Germany to an impressive third place on home soil at the 2006 World Cup against the odds but has failed to push on since then. Having decided to quit the national team he joined Bayern Munich with the aim of revitalising the club. Under his reign they reached the Champions League quarter-final only to lose to Barcelona and were only three points off the pace with five games left in the Bundesliga when he was replaced following a disagreement with the directors. Now coaching the USA national team, he was once linked to the Liverpool job but has found solace in anonymity.
