Keane left Ireland’s World Cup training camp in 2002 in Saipan amid reservations over the facilities and general concerns over the FAI’s preparation for the tournament. A very public falling-out with manager Mick McCarthy took place, with the peak of Keane’s fury being aired like dirty linen in a team meeting. Keane later returned, although not as captain, after McCarthy’s departure under his successor Brian Kerr.
