A new report claims that Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak would be very interested in joining Liverpool in the summer although it remains to be seen if the Reds are willing to spend £120m to sign him.

At the start of the week, I wrote that Liverpool need to involve themselves in the race to sign Isak if they sell Darwin Nunez. The Swedish striker has been incredible this season and with 19 goals in all competitions this season, he is playing himself into a transfer conversation with the biggest clubs in Europe.

A front three of Cody Gakpo/Luis Diaz on the left wing, Mohamed Salah on the right and Isak in the middle would be deadly. Of course, this would require Liverpool to extend Salah’s contract and spend a pretty penny to sign Isak.

It does seem as though Isak would be happy to move to Liverpool based on new reports.

According to a report from Fraser Fletcher from TEAMtalk, Newcastle hitman Alexander Isak would be interested in swapping Newcastle for Liverpool.

Fletcher reports: “Sources have revealed that Isak would be very interested in a move to Anfield. It’s no secret that he wants to play consistent Champions League football and compete for trophies, which would be almost guaranteed with Liverpool.”

The report goes on to say that Newcastle are fully aware of Isak’s ambitions to play “at the very top” which is part of why the Tyneside club is pushing so hard to be in the Champions League.

The biggest obstacle is Liverpool’s willingness to spend huge money to sign Isak. The 25-year-old would reportedly cost £120m this summer and while the Reds have “shortlisted” Isak, it would require Liverpool to demolish their transfer record to get a deal done.

Liverpool spent £75million on Virgil van Dijk in January 2018 and were close to spending £111m on Moises Caicedo before the midfielder rejected them to complete a £115m move to Chelsea.

Signing Isak would be a monumental sign of intent from Liverpool

If they were to sign Isak, it would be received all over Europe as a signal of intent from Liverpool under Arne Slot. The Reds have been fantastic under the Dutch manager this season and seem likely to win some silverware this season.

If they were to win the Premier League, extend their three key contracts and sign Isak, Liverpool would be well on their way to assembling one of the greatest sides the country has seen.

It must be said, it’s very difficult to imagine FSG sanctioning a £120m fee but crazier things have happened.
