Social media has been ablaze with debates over how much Florian Wirtz is set to cost Liverpool but behind closed doors, they are over the moon with the deal they have secured.
With the Reds close to a deal in the region of £126million, rival fans and pundits alike have been debating whether or not FSG are overpaying.
Yet, in a market that saw Arsenal spend over £100m to sign Declan Rice, surely signing one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe at a not too dissimilar price isn’t a mistake?
Well, time will prove the decisive judge.
Ben Foster thinks Liverpool are actually getting a bargain.
“Again, the way the market is going, the prices that players are being bought for is ridiculous. He would be in the £150m bracket if you’re looking at that type of player,” Foster said on the Fozcast.
“It might have to be that. If they’re rejecting £118m, it might have to be something like that. But he’d be some player. He’d be a great signing for any team in the Premier League.”
Honigstein says Liverpool have signed one of the best players of the next decade
Ralph Honigstein, a German football expert and close friend of Jurgen Klopp’s, says Liverpool will look back on Wirtz’s time at Anfield and realize the true value of the deal they’ve brokered.
“If Liverpool get 10 years out of Florian Wirtz, and I think there is a realistic chance that he might never move from there, then you can take that money, divide it by 10 and it will look very reasonable,” Honigstein said on talkSPORT.
“He will play as a number 10, that’s the main reason they got him over Bayern as they couldn’t quite promise that central position to him.
“Will he be a success? I think he has all the attributes to be a success as he’s tenacious but also super skilful on the ball, good between the lines and is a cross between Kai Havertz and Joshua Kimmich.
“He brings the technique and elegance on the ball, but also that tenacity and is great at pressing. Liverpool know what they are doing.”
Fabrizio Romano explains why Liverpool are delighted with their imminent new signing
Not only are FSG delighted with the way Michael Edwards and Richarch Hughes have won the battle to sign Wirtz, the coaching staff are excited to see him in action.
While speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Romano said: “Yeah, it’s about excitement, I would say. Big excitement among all people at the club.
“It’s about the management, it’s about the coaching staff, looking forward to working with a player like Florian Wirtz, who can also offer different solutions on the tactical point of view, who can play in several positions up front, so it can be an excellent addition to a team who already won obviously the Premier League title last season in a fantastic way.
“There is excitement and it’s not just about the fan base. I can guarantee that internally they believe they won a crazy race because there were many clubs in the race for Florian Wirtz.”
