LFC Youth Watch – Chris Mavinga Match Report v Wigan

|

Chris Mavinga7th Apr – Liverpool 2 – 3 Wigan Athletic (Premier Reserve League North) – Young defender Chris Mavinga will be disappointed with his performance as Liverpool reserves crashed to their first defeat since the opening day fixture against Blackburn Rovers. They lost 3-2 away at Wigan Athletic and this was all despite a very promising first half display. The Reds were on course to take their unbeaten record to 17 games after Gerardo Bruna had put the Reserves into the lead in the first half but a second half fightback from the Latics condemned the team to a rare defeat. Mavinga had an early chance to put the Reds into the lead after he headed over from a right wing corner but Bruna did put Liverpool into a deserved lead mid way trhough the first half from the penalty spot. The Reds seemed however to go to sleep in the second half and Mavinga will be disappointed in the manner the goals were conceded. Straight after the half-time break substitute Kelvin Hare put the Latics level after a scramble in the box saw Peter Gulacsi perform heroics with an outstanding triple save, but he couldn’t stop Hare’s effort going in. The Reds had a couple of efforts through Lauri Dalla Valle and Bruna to restore the lead but it was the home side who capitalised on the chances they created. Within minutes of each other Tomasz Kupisz and Daniel Redmond scored two quick fire goals, putting the game out of reach of the visitors. The Reds were caught on the break for Kupisz’s goal and Mavinga and the rest of the backline will be disappointed at how they let the game get away from them and although Nikolaj Kolhert got the Reds back into the game to set up a grandstand finish, the game had slipped away and Wigan held on for a 3-2 win.
