Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Charlton’s young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. The 18 year old will join the Reds on May 10th and will cost in the region of £1.7million, with further payments dependent on appearances. England youth international Shelvey, became Charlton’s youngest ever player to play for the senior team back in April 2008 when he played against Barnsley in a Championship match aged just 16 years and 59 days. Now 18, Jonjo has played 48 games for the Addicks and scored 8 goals during that time, becoming the club’s youngest ever scorer in both the league and the FA Cup. Liverpool Managing Director Christian Purslow was delighted with the signing, speaking to Liverpoolfc.tv:

“Jonjo is an exciting young England international. His signing is part of our long-term strategic recruitment plan and we all look forward to welcoming him to Melwood.”

Shelvey is a box to box midfielder who loves playing in the hole just behind the striker. He has a very good passing range, shooting abilities and physical presence.

In another positive move for youth development at the club, as a result of the transfer, the Reds are looking into the possibility of building a strategic partnership with Charlton which would involve more players moving between the two clubs.
