ANOTHER window without a new striker but there are positives

|

Another transfer window has come and gone, and the feeling among some is that Liverpool FC still has not done enough to bolster its squad to get a top four finish, let alone mount a serious title challenge. Like many Liverpool supporters I am disappointed in the way Roy Hodgson dealt with this transfer period. It is no secret that Liverpool FC is in desperate need for a quality striker and judging by last season, we cannot afford to lay all the goal scoring burdens on Fernando Torres. While it is certainly a plus in securing Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Paul Konchesky, Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles, acquiring a striker would have been the icing on the cake Liverpool fans were looking for. This would have indicated a very successful transfer period for Hodgson and Liverpool.

However, with that said, Liverpool FC as it stands is much stronger than they were at this period last term. Notwithstanding the three nil defeat we suffered in game week two at the hands of Manchester City. The league is not won in one game as the big spending Manchester City will soon find out. After comprehensively beating Liverpool FC, Roberto Mancini’s big spending Manchester City was humbled by Sunderland. After a busy transfer window seeing them splashing out over one hundred million pounds on new signings, great things were expected of them. Instead they faced a resolute Sunderland side, who handed then their first defeat.

Therefore, let us not be daunted seeing that we suffered a tough defeat at City; the Premier League shows us that it is not about one game but an entire season and in this league any team can beat any other on any given day. This was proven over the weekend when Tottenham faced Wigan Athletic and the as-before mentioned Sunderland and Man-City. Indeed the previous weekend saw newly promoted Newcastle thrashing a hapless Aston Villa.

So while Roy Hodgson was unable to secure a quality striker, that’s now water under the bridge, his focus must now be turned on selecting his best eleven players and getting them to play well together. His best eleven for me, would look like this, Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Konchesky, Meireles, Poulsen, Gerrard, Kuyt, Cole and Fernando Torres; with his substitutes being Jones, Skrtel, Aurelio, Lucas, Babel, Jovanovic. We have to face reality that unless the owners are changed this will be the group of players representing us and they need our complete support.

I have been a Liverpool F.C supporter since the mid 80's, I fell in love with this club when I saw the likes of Ian Rush and John Barnes play. I hold a Law degree from the University of London ,and a Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of the West Indies.

Agree with you here. RH tried to sign a striker but was not going to pay over the odds for one. Disappointing finish to what I thought was a very good transfer window. However, RH was never going to go out and sign a striker for 20 million plus. I kinda wish we would have gone after Huntelaar. But as you say, water under the bridge.

He’s probably going to play Babel up front when Torres needs a day off during cup games and what not. I got no problem with that, as I think Babel will do well as a striker.

Wow, Man City spent over 1 million pounds hey? Oooh big spenders!

i am happy with the transfers we made actually.mascherano’s loss is surely not a minor.we also lost yossi who has served us very good, but we bought an english and top class player, joe cole.we also gave aquilani who flopped in england and bought raul meireles, who is surely fitter than aquilani and his skills will be seen on the pitch.konchesky is very good and way better than insua.poulsen is experienced and can help a lot.i think roy will try to get babel reach his potential and i have faith in babel.lets just finalise the ownership status and we are good then.
    Reina
    Johnson Carragher Agger Konchesky
    Meireles Poulsen Gerrard
    Joe Cole Kuyt
    Torres
    Roy might also play a 4-4-2 formation against small teams,with a babel-torres or torres-ngog or torres-kuyt partnerhsip.

Thomas/Stavros – surely it’s that you think that Roy SHOULD use Babel to support Torres more, not that you think he WILL. All signs point to Babel being behind Cole, N’gog & Gerrard in the pecking order for any attacking role through the middle, and behind Kuyt, Jovanovich & Maxi (with Pacheco pushing him close) for a place out wide.

Many of us were calling for Benayoun to be played through the middle last season, in the role that has now been handed to Cole, and are yet to see anything that suggests that Cole is a better fit for the role than Benayoun was. I do agree with you in that we’d be better served by switching to 433 anyway, preferably with Babel & Pacheco receiving A LOT more starts to give the team some much needed pace and energy

Like Rafa, Roy has his hands tied by the dire economic state of the club. This was the fourth consecutive transfer window in which Liverpool FC made a profit on transfers. The American asset strippers and their humble servant Christian ‘player account’ Purslow are running the club down. When the yanks came, the club was heading for the second Champions’ league final in three years. What have we won since and what are our current goals? And all this because of the greed and/or incompetence of David Moores and Rick Parry. You have killed our club…
