Why we can’t afford for this defensive trend to continue

|

Injury can be partly blamed for this change but also some tactical and personnel changes have to be taken into consideration. A more attack minded Glen Johnson replaced a more defensive focused Alvaro Arbeloa at the start of last season, while an inexperienced Emiliano Insua had to take over from the consistently injured Fabio Aurelio. Combined with the poor form in early season of Jamie Carragher, the team was not as solid as it should have been. Johnson lacked the positional sense and organisational skills of Arbeloa, Insua was too inexperienced while question were asked about Carra’s age.

The issues have not really been addressed and have carried over into this season under Roy Hodgson. The change from man to man to zonal marking at set pieces hasn’t made a blind bit of difference to this vulnerability while Konchesky, who has replaced Insua, has got injured in two of the three games he has started for Liverpool this season. On top of this we have seen the performance level of Martin Skrtel drop since has excellent displays of a couple of years ago, Jamie Carragher is currently less than inspiring, while Roy continues to play our best defender, in my opinion, Daniel Agger out of position at left back which has led to his confidence being reduced significantly.

Roy’s teams are known for one thing: organisation, and although the team is a work in progress, we need to see a semblance of this philosophy sometime in the near future. At a current rate of goals’s conceded we will concede 57 before the season is out, and although I know we won’t actually concede that many, we are certainly on course to surpass last season’s numbers, which will surely see us way off the pace of the top four sides.

it’s half time in europa league and i don’t think i’ll bother with the second half, just more of the same crap we’ve been served up all season! same uclas lucas giving the ball away and then foulingin dangerous areas, same no control kuyt with the elephant touch, same past it carra blaming everyone else and, i will forgive fernando torres most things but not a lack of bloody effort! they ALL need to remember who they play for and give themselves a good bloody shake!

i wrote on this site a few weeks ago, roy will play his best team, WRONG he wont rest our best players needlessly WRONG he will play attacking football WRONG. he will do the common sense things WRONG.
playing lukas and poulson is totally negative, lukas did no more than go through the motions tonight – get rid
if roy has got any idea he will get torres to play deeper, then he can play off people, that way he will be involved and able to use his pace and skill – its blindingly obvious.

The stats don’t lie. Our defence is now in decline and needs rebuilding. Carra is too slow and not athletic enough even his experience can’t save him anymore, johnson not a rb. In attack we have no width and we find it hard to break well organised teams down. Lfc needs big rebuild

we have no pace or rather we dont use it, torres should be played deeper where he can use his pace, if the opposition want to still stay back then he can run at them, that would be even better, he must go all out attack on sunday we all need a lift, and the team need a confidence booster. its blackpool if they score more than us in an attacking game good on them.
